Di Lorenzo, a 24-year-old left-hander, advanced to the doubles final in the last (2019) Berkeley Challenger and the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals in the inaugural (2018) edition.
Also today, Maria Kozyreva, a fifth-year senior at nearby Saint Mary's College from Russia, and No. 14 seed Maegan Manasse, a University of California, Berkeley assistant coach and former Bears All-American, won their final-round qualifying matches.
Kozyreva is scheduled to face No. 1 seed Zheng Saisai of China on Wednesday in the first round after the 10 a.m. match between No. 5 seed Katie Volynets, 19, of Walnut Creek, Calif., 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) from Berkeley, and Marcela Zacarias of Mexico.
ATP Tour — Wild cards Brandon Nakashima, 20, of San Diego and Sem Verbeek (University of the Pacific, 2013-16) of the Netherlands edged Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and Jean-Julien Rojer, 40, of the Netherlands 4-6, 6-3 [10-8] in the opening round of the inaugural San Diego Open.
