Cal star Giavara wins opener in $25K Newport Beach

Haley Giavara, an All-American at the University of California, Berkeley, defeated Skyler Grishuk of Newport Beach, Calif., 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 today in a round-robin opener in the $25,000 UTR Pro Tennis Series in Newport Beach.
Also, Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer of Irvine, Calif., routed Madison Weekley of Alamo in the San Francisco Bay Area 6-1, 6-1 in a matchup of high school juniors.
Lutkemeyer was the runner-up in the second-place playoff in last week's $25,000 UTR tournament in Newport Beach. Weekley has verbally committed to attend Saint Mary's in the Bay Area.
Giavara, a sophomore from San Diego, is scheduled to meet Leyden Games, a USC signee from Irvine, Calif., on Tuesday. Games did not play today.
Weekley is slated to face Bridget Stammel, a high school junior from Dallas, on Wednesday. Stammel, who's headed to Vanderbilt in 2022, topped Camille Kiss, a UC Santa Barbara freshman from Redlands, Calif., 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4.
Cal men — The Bears, playing their first dual match in nine months, beat visiting Saint Mary's 5-2. Cal's Paul Barretto, a senior from Tiburon, Calif., in the Bay Area, won at No. 1 singles and doubles.
Fans were not allowed at the dual match because of health protocols.
