No. 1 seed Cal and No. 15 Stanford rolled to 4-0 home victories today in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships.
The Bears (20-1) overwhelmed Texas-Rio Grande Valley (11-11) at the Hellman Tennis Complex, and the Cardinal (15-5) pounded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (24-1) at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
In the second round of the 64-team tournament on Saturday, Cal will host UC Santa Barbara (19-7) at 3 p.m., and Stanford will host Texas A&M (17-10) at noon. The winners will advance to the round of 16 on Thursday in Tulsa, Okla.
The Cal and Stanford men are scheduled to play in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday. The 13th-seeded Bears (17-6) will host Army (12-8) at noon, and the Cardinal (14-10) will play Notre Dame (15-13) in Evanston, Ill., at 8 a.m. PDT.
