McDonald lifts UCLA in Men's Team Indoors
McDonald, ranked only 34th after missing a month with a broken wrist, defeated No. 22 Wayne Montgomery 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on
Court 1.
McDonald, a semifinalist in the $100,000 Tiburon Challenger and quarterfinalist in the $100,000 Sacramento Challenger last October, also won at No. 1 doubles with Martin Redlicki.
Logan Staggs, a sophomore from Tracy, triumphed at No. 5 singles for the ninth-ranked Bruins (6-1).
Also advancing were No. 1 seed Virginia and No. 4 USC. The top-ranked Cavaliers, playing in their home city, trounced No. 16 San Diego 4-0, and No. 4 USC nipped No. 13 South Florida 4-3.
Collin Altamirano, a sophomore from Sacramento, won at No. 3 singles and doubles for Virginia (6-0), the reigning national champion.
Jake DeVine, a freshman from Los Altos Hills in the Bay Area, prevailed at No. 3 singles for the sixth-ranked Trojans (6-0).
Virginia will play No. 9 seed Wake Forest today in the quarterfinals. UCLA will take on No. 2 Texas A&M, and USC will meet No. 5 Texas Christian.
Neither Cal nor Stanford is playing in the 16-team tournament.
