Gordon, 16, will meet another wild card, 14-year-old Amanda Anisimova of Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Thursday for a quarterfinal berth. Anisimova surprised No. 7 seed Bianca Andreescu of Canada 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Unseeded Jessi Muljat, 14, of Sacramento and Anna Campana of Hillsborough in the Bay Area lost in the second round of the girls 16s.
The Eddie Herr Championship is one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world. Past competitors include Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic.
Herr, the father of international junior tennis, died in 2000 at 93.
