Cal's Manasse survives scare in National Indoors

   Top-seeded Danielle Collins of Virginia lost on Thursday in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
   Second-seeded Maegan Manasse of Cal almost joined Collins on the sideline.
   Manasse survived 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 against Nuria Ormeno Ruiz of Colorado at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
   Collins, last year's NCAA singles champion, fell to Katarina Adamovic of Oklahoma State 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
   Manasse will face Sydney Campbell of reigning NCAA champion Vanderbilt today in the second round.
   Florida's Brooke Austin, a semifinalist in the $50,000 Sacramento Challenger in July, beat Stanford's Taylor Davidson 6-4, 6-2.
   In doubles, top-seeded Manasse and Denise Starr will play Giuliana Olmos, from Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Gabby Smith of USC in today's quarterfinals.
   In men's singles, Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski of Stanford and Andre Goransson of Cal reached the second round. Fawcett defeated Notre Dame's Quentin Monaghan, an NCAA semifinalist last May, 6-2, 6-4.
