But Feliciano Lopez is no picnic, either.
Tursunov, a Russian citizen and longtime Sacramento-area resident, lost to Spain's Lopez 6-7 (5), 6-2, 9-7 Monday in the first round at Wimbledon. Tursunov is not in the men's doubles field, and the draw for mixed doubles, which returns to the Games for the first time since 1924, will be announced Tuesday.
The 29-year-old veteran fell to 1-3 lifetime in Olympic singles and doubles combined. At Beijing in 2008, he lost to Switzerland's Federer in the first round and teamed with Mikhail Youzhny in a second-round loss to eventual gold medalists Federer and Stansilas Wawrinka.
Lopez, a 30-year-old left-hander, is a three-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist ranked No. 29 in the world. He reached a career-high No. 15 in January.
The injury-plagued Tursunov has plunged from a career-high No. 20 in 2006 to No. 141.
WTA Tour in Washington, D.C. -- Seventh-seeded CoCo Vandeweghe, a wild card, defeated Erika Sema of Japan 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the Citi Open.
Vandeweghe, a 20-year-old resident of Rancho Santa Fe in the San Diego area, played part-time for the Sacramento Capitals during this month's World TeamTennis regular season. She is scheduled to rejoin the team Sept. 14-16 for the WTT playoffs in Charleston, S.C.
