Querrey pulls off upset at Queen's Club

   One year ago this Saturday, Sam Querrey underwent surgery to remove bone spurs in his right elbow.
   The 6-foot-6 right-hander continued his comeback Thursday by upsetting eighth-seeded Julien Benneteau of France 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the third round of the grass-court Aegon Championships at Queen's Club in London.
   "I'm feeling really good," Querrey, a San Francisco native who's scheduled to play five matches for the Sacramento Capitals of World TeamTennis next month, told reporters. "I have been feeling better every week this year, and my serve is feeling great. I've only dropped serve once so far in three matches.
   "(My) return game is feeling good. That's the first time I have won three matches in a row (on the ATP World Tour) in a while. (I'm) just feeling really confident."
   Querrey, the 2010 champion at Queen's Club, will meet Ivan Dodig of Croatia in today's quarterfinals. Dodig knocked off second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5). Tsonga hurt the little finger on his right (dominant) hand when slipped and fell in the sixth game of the final set. He might miss Wimbledon.
   Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany -- Treat Conrad Huey, a Washington, D.C., native who plays for the Philippines, and Scott Lipsky, a former NCAA doubles runner-up for Stanford, upset second-seeded Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic and Julien Knowle of Austria 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 tiebreak in the quarterfinals of the grass-court tournament.
   WTA tour in Birmingham, England -- Fourth-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones, an ex-NCAA doubles champion from Cal, and Abigail Spears of San Diego routed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-0, 6-3 in the first round of the grass-court Aegon Classic.
   Bank of the West Classic -- Nicole Gibbs, who won the NCAA singles title last month as a Stanford sophomore, received a wild card into the Bank of the West Classic.

   Men's Futures in Chico -- Fifth-seeded Fritz Wolmarans of South Africa outlasted unseeded Jeff Dadamo, last week's runner-up in the Sacramento Futures, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the second round of the $15,000 Chico Futures at the Chico Racquet Club & Resort.
   Two former Cal players lost. Pedro Zerbini, a three-time All-Pacific-10 Conference first-team selection (2009-11), fell to third-seeded Michael McClune of Irvine 6-2, 6-2. Qualifier Nicholas John Andrews, a Sacramento-area resident who was named an All-American in doubles as a senior this past season, succumbed to Bjorn Fratangelo of Pittsburgh 6-2, 6-3.
   Phillip Simmonds, who won the Sacramento doubles title with fellow American Vahid Mirzadeh, ousted seventh-seeded Daniel King-Turner of New Zealand 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
   Today's quarterfinal matchups are No. 1 Tennys Sandgren of Gallatin, Tenn., vs. Wolmarans, McClune vs. No. 6 Devin Britton of Brandon, Miss., No. 4 Kento Takeuchi of Japan vs. Joshua Zavala of Amarillo, Texas, and Simmonds vs. Fratangelo. Britton won his first career singles title last week in Sacramento.
   In this weekend's doubles final, top-seeded King-Turner and Nima Roshan of Australia will face second-seeded Britton and Jordan Cox of Duluth, Ga.
