Cal women to face No. 1 UCLA in NCAAs

   The showdown is set.
   No. 9 Cal (20-6) will face No. 1 UCLA (24-2) on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga. The Bears advanced with a 4-0 victory over No. 26 Georgia Tech (16-12) on Thursday, while the Bruins cooked Rice 4-0.
   Cal and UCLA split their two dual matches this season. The Bruins won 4-3 against a Cal lineup without Jana Juricova, the reigning NCAA singles champion, on Feb. 24 in Los Angeles. The Bears prevailed 4-3 on April 13 in Berkeley.
   The last time Cal and UCLA met in the NCAA Championships was in the 2008 final, with the Bruins winning 4-0.
   No. 5 Stanford also reached the quarterfinals, cruising to a 4-1 victory over No. 12 Northwestern (20-9).
   The Cardinal (21-1), which seeks its second NCAA title in three years, will meet No. 4 USC (23-3) on Saturday. Stanford won the teams' only meeting this season, 4-2 on April 13 at Stanford.

   Men's Challenger in Fergana, Uzbekistan -- Third-seeded John Paul Fruttero, an All-American at Cal in 2001 and 2002, and Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus eked out a 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 tiebreak victory over Uzbek wild cards Rifat Biktyakov and Murad Inoyatov in the quarterfinals of the $35,000 Fergana Challenger.
   Fruttero and Ignatik will face second-seeded Raven Klaasen and Izak Van der Merwe, both of South Africa, in today's semifinals. Fruttero and Klaasen have played together for most of last year and this year. 
   Unseeded Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan and Jimmy Wang, a Taiwan native who trains in the Sacramento area, lost to top-seeded Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana, 30-year-old twins from Thailand, 6-1, 6-4.
   Men's Futures in Tampa, Fla. -- Pedro Zerbini, who starred at Cal from 2007 to 2011, shocked fourth-seeded Fritz Wolmarans of South Africa 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the $10,000 Tampa USTA Men's Pro Circuit Futures. Wolmarans won the 2010 Davis Futures title.
   Zerbini, first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference from 2009 to 2011, will play Christian Harrison, the 17-year-old brother of rising young American Ryan Harrison, in today's quarterfinals.
