Brothers lift Cal to dramatic win in NCAAs

On Mother's Day, the Cal men were particularly thankful to Yuriko McLachlan of New Zealand.
Her sons, Ben and Riki, lifted the 14th-ranked Bears to a dramatic 4-3 victory over Texas Tech on Sunday in Berkeley in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.
The No. 22 Red Raiders (16-9) were within two games of advancing to the round of 16 in Athens, Ga., when Francisco Zambon led Riki McLachlan, a junior, 4-2 in the third set at No. 5 singles. But McLachlan rallied to win 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 and tie the dual match 3-3.
In the deciding match, 37th-ranked Ben McLachlan, a sophomore, subdued 40th-ranked Gonzalo Escobar 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
"It was incredibly special to have the two brothers, on Mother's Day, come through for us," Cal coach Peter Wright said on calbears.com. "We looked like we were dead to rights. ... We were struggling hard, and Texas Tech was really solid today. But we knew if we hung in there long enough, we could pull off the win."
Cal (14-11) will meet No. 2 Virginia, last year's runner-up, in the round of 16 on Friday at 1 p.m. PDT in Athens.
The No. 11 Stanford men also advanced to the round of 16, notching a 4-1 victory over No. 39 Santa Clara at Stanford. The Broncos (22-6) played in the NCAA Tournament for the first year.
At No. 1 singles, 36th-ranked Bradley Klahn of Stanford defeated No. 91 Kyle Dandan 6-3, 7-5. Klahn won the 2010 NCAA singles title.
Santa Clara's victory came at No. 2 singles as No. 123 John Lamble stunned No. 29 Ryan Thacher 7-5, 6-3.
Stanford (19-8) will face No. 6 Kentucky on Friday at 1 p.m. PDT. The Cardinal men have won 18 NCAA team titles, second only to USC's 19, but none since 2000.
Women's Challenger in Raleigh, N.C. -- Top-seeded Alexandra Mueller of Abington, Pa., and Asia Muhammed of Henderson, Nev., lost to second-seeded Gabriela Dabrowski and Marie-Eve Pelletier, both of Canada, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 tiebreak in the doubles final of the $25,000 Raleigh Women's Challenger.
Muhammed, 21, was seeking her fifth doubles crown on the ITF Women's Circuit. She will debut for the Sacramento Capitals of World TeamTennis in July.
